Streetsville "The Village In The City" came into existence in 1825 when Timothy Street, a very enterprising individual was granted a piece of land for surveying the land that the British purchased (second purchase - 648,000 acres) from the Mississauga people.Timothy Street built his house (41 Mill Street) in 1825and is believed to be the first brick house built in Peel County. Streetsville is named after Timothy Street and is a community located in northwesternpart ofMississauga on the Credit River. The boundaries of Streetsville are: Argentia Road in the North, Eglinton Avenue in the South, Creditview Road in The East and Erin Mills Parkway in the West.
Streetsville was incorporated as a Village in 1858 and it became a Town in 1962 (pop. 5000)with Frank Dowling as its first Mayor. In 1974 it became a part of the City of Mississauga, four years later (1978), Hazel McCallion became the third mayor of Mississauga (last mayor of Streetsville 1970-1973) and she continues to serve till this day and remains one of the longest serving mayors of Canada.
Although the former village is surrounded by modern suburban development, it is home to the largest concentration of historic buildings in the City. It seeks to keep a "small town" charm by retaining a variety of historical buildings and streetscapes.
As part of this attempt to maintain a separate identity from the larger city, the names of several main Mississauga roads, as they pass through Streetsville, revert back to what they were called when Streetsville was a Village (Mississauga Road reverts back to Queen Street and Bristol Road reverts back to Main Street). Our office is in the heart of Streetsville located at the corner of Queen St and Main Street - Main Street becomes Pearl Street West of Queen St. Other main thoroughfares that cross Streetsville include Creditview Road, Eglinton Avenue and Britannia Road.
Streetsville has held an annual Bread and Honey Festival since 1973 and its founding president was Sam McCallion. The festival takes place in the village of Streetsville every first weekend in June.
The Village of Streetsville is also the host of the Mississauga Annual Santa Claus Parade. The parade starts at Queen Street South at Britannia Road and travels south through the village to disperse at various locations after Church Street junction.
The Streetsville Cenotaph is located at Queen Street South and Main Street is also home to Canada Day (July 1st) celebrations and Armistice Day (November 11) ceremonies.
